Scripture

Proverbs 15:4 (ESV)
"A gentle tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it breaks the spirit."

Ephesians 4:29 (ESV)

Devotion

You carry a tree of life in your mouth.

Proverbs 15:4 tells us that our words don’t just land on ears — they take root in hearts. When we speak with grace, truth, and gentleness, we plant seeds that grow into healing, peace, and restoration.

Ephesians 4:29 echoes that same principle: our speech should build up and give grace — not tear down. It reminds us that every word has an assignment. Our tongues should not be used for corrupting or careless talk, but for truth that restores, encourages, and strengthens others.

Every conversation is a chance to partner with the Spirit of God — or with the spirit of this world. And when we choose life-giving words, we release strength, hope, and direction into those around us.

🟠 Colossians 4:6 (ESV)“Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.”
🟠 Proverbs 16:24 (ESV)“Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body.”
🟠 Isaiah 50:4 (ESV)“The Lord God has given me the tongue of those who are taught, that I may know how to sustain with a word him who is weary.”

You may not realize it, but your words can sustain the weary. They can speak peace into chaos. They can call forth identity in others. They can literally shift an atmosphere.

Let today be the turning point where your mouth becomes a ministry tool. Speak life — and watch it multiply.

Prayer Focus

  • Lord, teach me to speak with the wisdom, gentleness, and grace of the Spirit.

  • Fill my mouth with words that lift, not crush; that strengthen, not weaken.

  • Give me discernment to know when someone needs encouragement — and courage to speak it.

  • Let my tongue be a tree of life today — producing fruit in every conversation.

  • Use my words to water dry places in others and awaken purpose in their lives.

  • I choose to speak life — in my home, over my church, in every room I enter.
