Day 28: Serve One Another

40 Days of Prayer & Fasting

Prayer Focus: Becoming a Servant

“Through love serve one another.”
Galatians 5:13 ESV

Yesterday our prayer was:

“Lord, teach me to love like You.”

Today we ask what that love looks like in action:

“Lord, teach me to serve like Jesus.”

Love is more than something we feel or say.

Love serves.

Jesus didn't simply teach His disciples about serving. He demonstrated it with His own life.

Jesus Took the Towel

In John 13, Jesus did something remarkable.

He got up from the table, took a towel, poured water into a basin, and began washing His disciples' feet.

The One they called Lord and Teacher took the position of a servant.

Then Jesus told them:

“I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you.”
John 13:15 ESV

Jesus was showing them what life in His Kingdom looks like.

Greatness isn't found in how many people serve us.

Greatness is found in becoming willing to serve others.

Look for the Need

Serving doesn't always require a ministry position, title, or platform.

Sometimes serving means noticing.

Someone needs encouragement.

Someone needs help.

Someone needs a meal.

Someone needs prayer.

Someone needs somebody to listen.

Someone needs something done that nobody else wants to do.

Jesus said He “came not to be served but to serve…” (Mark 10:45 ESV).

If we're becoming more like Jesus, then serving should increasingly become part of who we are.

Serve Without Recognition

One of the greatest tests of a servant's heart is whether we're willing to serve when nobody notices.

No applause.

No recognition.

No credit.

Just obedience.

Serving becomes worship when we realize that ultimately we're doing it for the Lord.

Sometimes the most Christlike thing you will do today may be something nobody else ever sees.

But God sees it.

Today's Prayer Focus

Give Me a Servant's Heart
Remove pride and selfish ambition from me.

Open My Eyes
Help me notice needs instead of waiting to be asked.

Make Me Willing
Help me serve even when it is inconvenient.

Keep Me Humble
Teach me to serve without needing recognition.

Today's Prayer

Father, thank You for the example of Jesus.

Teach me to love people not only with my words but through my actions.

Give me a servant's heart.

Open my eyes to needs around me. Keep me from becoming so focused on myself that I overlook opportunities to help someone else.

Remove pride and the desire for recognition.

Let me serve joyfully, humbly, and faithfully.

Lord, teach me to serve like Jesus.

In Jesus' name, amen.

Today's Challenge

Ask God:

“Who can I serve today?”

Then look for an opportunity to do something practical for someone else.

And if possible, do something without receiving any recognition for it.

Let your service simply become an act of love toward Jesus.
