Day 29: Abide in Me
40 Days of Prayer & Fasting
Prayer Focus: Remaining Connected to Jesus
“Abide in me, and I in you.”
John 15:4 ESV
Yesterday our prayer was:
“Lord, teach me to serve like Jesus.”
Today, as we begin another week, we come back to the source of everything we've been praying about:
“Jesus, keep me close to You.”
We can serve, witness, love, give, and work for God, but none of those things can replace simply being with Jesus.
Before Jesus calls us to produce fruit, He calls us to abide.
Stay Connected to the Vine
In John 15, Jesus gives His disciples a simple picture:
He is the vine.
We are the branches.
A branch doesn't produce fruit by struggling harder. It produces fruit because it remains connected to the source of life.
Jesus says:
“…as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine…”
John 15:4 ESV
The word translated “abide” is the Greek word menō. It means to remain, stay, continue, or dwell.
Jesus is essentially saying:
Stay with Me. Remain in Me. Don't disconnect from Me.
Fruit Comes From Abiding
Sometimes we become focused on producing spiritual results.
We want to be more loving.
More patient.
More effective.
More fruitful.
But Jesus says:
“Apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5 ESV)
Christian fruitfulness doesn't begin with trying harder.
It begins with remaining closer.
Prayer isn't merely something we do to get something from God.
Scripture isn't simply information.
Worship isn't simply an activity.
These are ways we intentionally turn our hearts toward Christ and remain rooted in Him.
Don't Let Doing Replace Abiding
One of the dangers of serving God is becoming so busy doing things for Jesus that we neglect being with Jesus.
We can become busy with ministry.
Busy helping people.
Busy working.
Busy serving.
And still become spiritually dry.
Jesus never intended our service to flow from exhaustion.
Fruit flows from connection.
The more deeply we abide in Christ, the more His character should become visible through our lives.
Today's Prayer Focus
Keep Me Close
Don't let busyness pull my heart away from You.
Deepen My Relationship
Give me a greater desire for prayer, Scripture, and Your presence.

Change my character as I remain connected to You.
Remove What Distracts Me
Show me anything competing with my relationship with Christ.
Today's Prayer
Jesus, keep me close to You.
Forgive me for the times I have become more focused on doing things for You than simply being with You.
Teach me to abide.
Let Your Word remain in me. Let Your presence become more important than my productivity.
Produce in my life what I cannot produce on my own.
I don't want to simply work harder.
I want to remain closer.
Jesus, keep me connected to You.
In Your name, amen.
