The Table & The Garden

Weekly Prayer Focus

"Fix our eyes on Jesus, the Lamb who was slain and the King who is risen. Teach us to walk in the power of the cross and the beauty of the resurrection."

Scripture

Luke 22:19–20, 41–44 (NLT)
"He took some bread and gave thanks to God for it. Then He broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, 'This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.'

After supper He took another cup of wine and said, 'This cup is the new covenant between God and His people—an agreement confirmed with my blood, which is poured out as a sacrifice for you.'"
...
"He walked away, about a stone’s throw, and knelt down and prayed, 'Father, if you are willing, please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.' Then an angel from heaven appeared and strengthened Him. He prayed more fervently, and He was in such agony of spirit that His sweat fell to the ground like great drops of blood."

Devotion

On Thursday, everything intensifies.

Jesus gathers His disciples for a meal—but it’s more than tradition. It was the Passover meal, just as God had instructed Israel to observe for generations (see Matthew 26:17, Luke 22:15). But that night, Jesus redefined it.

The bread was no longer just unleavened—it became a symbol of His body.
The cup was no longer just the blood of a lamb—it became a declaration of the new covenant in His blood.

He wasn’t just remembering the first Exodus—He was preparing for the final deliverance.

Later that evening, Jesus went to the garden of Gethsemane, where He wrestled in prayer, not with rebellion, but with surrender. He chose the Father’s will over His own.

Before the cross, there was communion. Before the victory, there was surrender.
Holy Week Thursday challenges us to draw near to both—the table and the garden.

Prayer Focus

  • Thank Jesus for His body and blood—broken and poured out for us.

  • Pray for grace to walk in full surrender to God's will, especially in moments of testing.

  • Intercede for believers who are facing decisions that require costly obedience.

  • Ask God to help us never treat communion lightly—but with reverence and remembrance.

Declaration

I remember You, Jesus.
I take the bread, and I take the cup—and I take up my cross.
Not my will, but Yours be done.
Make me faithful in the garden and grateful at the table.
