The Weight of Your Words

Scripture

Proverbs 18:21 (ESV)
"Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits."

Devotion

Words are never neutral.
Every time we open our mouths, we are releasing either life or death — blessing or cursing — building or tearing down.

Proverbs 18:21 is a sober reminder that our words create reality. What we speak over our families, our ministries, our cities, and even ourselves, matters. Heaven responds to agreement — and so does hell.

This week, we begin a journey of surrendering our tongues to the Lord. We will examine what we say, how we say it, and what spirit we’re speaking from.

Jesus said in Matthew 12:34, “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” That means our words reveal what’s ruling our hearts — fear, faith, pride, hope, bitterness, or love.

🟠 Psalm 141:3 — “Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips.”
🟠 James 3:10 — “From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so.”

It’s time to take our words seriously — not just avoiding the obvious sins like gossip or slander, but becoming intentional with blessing, truth, and encouragement.

Let’s speak life — and watch the fruit of it multiply.

Prayer Focus

  • Lord, reveal to me the true weight of my words — and forgive me for careless speech.

  • Teach me to speak life over myself, my family, and my church.

  • Set a guard over my mouth — let nothing destructive come out of it.

  • Help me recognize when my words are rooted in fear, anger, or unbelief — and redirect them by Your Spirit.

  • Make my mouth an instrument of encouragement, truth, and blessing.

  • I declare that this week, I will sow life with my words — and I will eat the fruit of that harvest.
