Day 2 — “Not by Bread Alone”

Scripture:

“But he answered, ‘It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
Matthew 4:4 (ESV)

Devotional Thought:

Fasting immediately confronts the lust of the flesh — our appetites, comforts, and cravings. Hunger reveals what we often depend on without realizing it. When the flesh is fed, it grows louder. When the flesh is denied, the Spirit becomes clearer.

Jesus spoke these words while fasting. He teaches us that life is not sustained by what we consume, but by what we receive from God. The purpose of fasting is not simply to say no to food, but to say yes to dependence on the Lord.

The flesh tells us, “Satisfy this now.”
The Spirit reminds us, “God is enough.”

As we deny the flesh, we are not emptying ourselves — we are being filled with something greater. Hunger becomes an invitation to listen. Weakness becomes a place of reliance. Today, we learn again that God sustains us.

Prayer Focus:

  • Ask the Lord to reveal where appetite and comfort have led your decisions

  • Pray for strength to deny the flesh and depend fully on God

  • Ask God to replace physical cravings with spiritual hunger

  • Thank the Lord for being your true source and sustainer

Prayer:

“Lord, teach me to depend on You more than what satisfies my flesh. Quiet my appetites and strengthen my spirit. Let Your Word sustain me today. I choose You over comfort. Amen.”
