Prayer Focus: Spiritual Discernment
“Test everything; hold fast what is good.”
1 Thessalonians 5:21 ESV
Over the last several days, we have been praying about hearing God's voice, receiving His wisdom, knowing His ways, and following the Holy Spirit.
Today we focus on something essential to all of those:
“Lord, give me discernment.”
Not every thought that enters our mind is from God. Not every feeling is His direction. Not every voice speaking into our lives should carry the same weight.
Scripture teaches us to test everything.
How Do We Test What We Hear?
The first and most important standard is the Word of God.
God will never lead us contrary to what He has already revealed in Scripture.
John tells believers:
“Do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits…”
1 John 4:1 ESV
Spiritual maturity isn't believing everything that sounds spiritual. It is learning to recognize what is consistent with God's Word, God's character, and the truth of Jesus Christ.
The more familiar we become with Scripture, the better equipped we are to recognize what does and does not agree with it.
Discernment Requires Maturity
Hebrews describes mature believers as those who have their “powers of discernment trained by constant practice…” (Hebrews 5:14 ESV).
Discernment develops as we walk with God.
We pray.
We study His Word.
We listen.
We obey.
And over time, we become increasingly able to recognize what is true.
This is especially important when our emotions are strong. Something can feel right and still need to be tested against Scripture.
Our prayer should never simply be:
“Lord, confirm what I feel.”
Instead:
“Lord, show me what is true.”
Hold Fast to What Is Good
Testing isn't the end of Paul's instruction.
After saying “test everything,” he tells us to “hold fast what is good.”
Once something has been tested by God's Word and recognized as true, we need to hold onto it.
Don't allow fear to talk you out of truth.
Don't allow pressure to move you away from what Scripture says.
Don't allow every new opinion to shake what God has established.
Discern carefully.
Then hold fast to what is good.
Today's Prayer Focus
Give Me Discernment
Help me recognize truth from error.
Ground Me in Your Word
Make Scripture the standard by which I test what I hear.
Guard My Heart
Keep emotions, fear, pressure, and personal desires from becoming my source of direction.
Make Me Mature
Train me to recognize what reflects Your character and Your truth.
Today's Prayer
Father, give me discernment.
Help me recognize what is true and reject what is false. Teach me not to follow every thought, feeling, opinion, or voice without first bringing it before You.
Ground me deeply in Your Word.
When my emotions are strong, remind me that Your truth remains steady.
Give me wisdom to test what I hear and courage to hold firmly to what is good.
Holy Spirit, lead me into truth and make me increasingly sensitive to Your voice.

Today's Challenge
Before accepting something today simply because it sounds right or feels right, ask:
“Does this agree with God's Word?”
Open Scripture and test it.
