Day 18: Take the Next Step

40 Days of Prayer & Fasting

Prayer Focus: Obedience

“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.”
John 14:15 ESV

Yesterday our prayer was:

“Lord, give me courage to follow You.”

Today we move from courage to action:

“Lord, help me obey.”

Faith is more than believing what God says. Eventually, faith requires a response.

We can pray for direction, ask for wisdom, seek discernment, and wait for clarity. But when God has made something clear, there comes a point when we must take the next step.

Obedience Is an Expression of Love

Jesus connected obedience with our love for Him.

That changes how we should think about obedience.

We don't obey God simply because we're afraid of what will happen if we don't. We obey because we trust Him and love Him.

Sometimes obedience is dramatic.

More often, it happens in ordinary moments.

Forgive.

Apologize.

Serve.

Give.

Encourage someone.

Walk away from temptation.

Have the difficult conversation.

Do what Scripture has already told you to do.

Small acts of obedience can become significant moments in our spiritual journey.

Don't Wait for the Whole Plan

One of the easiest ways to delay obedience is to insist that God explain everything first.

But Scripture says:

“Be doers of the word, and not hearers only…”
James 1:22 ESV

God may not show us five steps ahead.

Sometimes He simply makes the next step clear.

Faith says:

“Lord, I don't need to know everything that happens afterward. If You've shown me what to do now, I will obey.”

Delayed obedience can easily become disobedience.

When God makes something clear, our response should be:

“Yes, Lord.”

Today's Prayer Focus

Make Me Obedient
Give me a heart that responds when You speak.

Remove My Excuses
Show me where I have delayed something You've already made clear.

Give Me Courage
Help me obey even when obedience costs something.

Keep Me Faithful
Teach me to honor You in the small decisions as well as the big ones.

Today's Prayer

Father, give me an obedient heart.

Forgive me for the times I have heard Your Word but delayed responding to it.

Show me where You have already made the next step clear.

Give me courage to obey even when I don't understand everything that comes afterward.

I want my obedience to flow from my love and trust in You.

Today, my answer is:

“Yes, Lord.”

In Jesus' name, amen.

Today's Challenge

Ask yourself:

“What has God already shown me that I haven't acted on?”

Don't ask for another step until you've considered whether you have obeyed the one already in front of you.

Then take one concrete step of obedience today.
