Prepared Mindset Part 3: Staying Connected in a Crisis

Ed Brown and Pastor Niel Petersen • Recorded October 2, 2024

How would your family stay in touch if the power went out and cell service stopped working? In this third Prepared Mindset resource, Ed Brown and Pastor Niel Petersen turn that question into a practical conversation about radios, backup power, household check-ins, and community coordination.

Prepare with faith and a steady mind

The discussion begins with a Christian perspective on preparedness: place your hope in Jesus Christ while taking practical steps to care for the people entrusted to you. Pastor Niel connects prayer and discernment with responsible preparation, and Ed emphasizes a calm mindset and the ability to adapt when a plan changes.

Start with your household, then build outward

Identify who needs to reach whom, where people are likely to be, and which communication methods they can use. The conversation compares ordinary FRS walkie-talkies, GMRS radios, and amateur radio. It also explores charging options, antennas, base stations, repeaters, and possible relays between trusted contacts.

Test equipment from the locations your plan depends on. Radio range varies with terrain, buildings, antennas, interference, power, and equipment. Use current FCC guidance and appropriate equipment for the radio service; an outage does not remove every operating requirement.

Agree on a check-in plan and practice it

Write down primary and backup settings, check-in times, a short message format, and what to do after a missed contact. Ed and Pastor Niel discuss scheduled check-ins and regular practice so a plan becomes familiar before a disruption. Ordinary “privacy codes” do not encrypt conversations or reserve a channel.

A shared plan for a church community

The recording considers a church base station with an outside antenna and backup power, supported by household radios and clear procedures. Those were proposals in the 2024 conversation; this post does not announce an operating HRC emergency channel. Confirm current arrangements with church leadership.

Prices, product examples, and coverage estimates in the recording are historical discussion points. The handout provides an equipment checklist and planning questions so you can evaluate current options against your actual needs.
