Discerning His Voice

Scripture:
1 John 4:1 (ESV)
"Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world."

Devotional Thought:
Hearing God’s voice is life-changing — but it’s just as important to know how to test what you hear.

God speaks clearly and consistently, but the enemy whispers lies, your flesh shouts opinions, and the world constantly pushes its own version of truth.

That’s why Scripture tells us to test the spirits.
Every thought, impression, or word must align with:

  • The Word of God

  • The character of God

  • The peace of the Spirit within you

If it contradicts the Bible, breeds fear or pride, or leads you away from Jesus — it is not His voice.

When you stay rooted in Scripture and close to the Spirit, you’ll grow in discernment. You’ll recognize counterfeit voices quickly and hold tight to what is true.

Prayer Focus:
Lord, make me wise and discerning.
Teach me to test what I hear.
Root me deeply in Your Word so I won’t be tossed by every voice or trend.
Keep me humble, teachable, and anchored in truth.

Prayer Points:

  • Help me filter every thought and word through Your Word.

  • Reveal any lie I have believed that doesn’t match Your truth.

  • Guard my heart from confusion, deception, and distraction.

  • Grow my discernment to know what is from You and what is not.

  • Let my life bear fruit that proves I walk in step with Your Spirit.
